Real Talks: Living the perfect life on Instagram

April 6, 2018      Leave a Comment

We are all constantly complaining about how in social media that nobody is real anymore and that now everyone has seemingly perfect lives. Indeed many people show their discontent with this, but it is also true that we all are or have been guilty of this phenomenon.

People only show the best version of themselves and I can agree with that. For example, no one will behave at work in the same way that they would do when they are with close friends. In the office we are all professionals, we use a technical language and we are respectful. While when we are with our social circle we say bad words, we get drunk and we even dance on the table if they put our favorite song on – and this does not make us fake people. At the end of the day we are both; young adults who also have fun. Is just that we have to behave in accordance with the environment, we do not want our boss or clients to think we have a ‘dirty mouth’ or that our friends see us a boring person who only talks about work.

The same thing happens with social networks. It is a happy place for everyone. There, we can only show the nice things that happen to us, the fun we have and our happy moments if we so want to. We all have problems, I don’t think that telling them to the world will make any difference. No one wants to remember sad moments. Have you seen an album of photos of your parents or your grandparents filled with sad or difficult stages and sags? No; all of the pictures are of situations of joys, marriages, parties, birthdays etc., they are always smiling in the photos. In the same way, most people only post the good times for a reason, that is what they will remember when they look back some day. Instagram photos do not represent a person’s life, it is just a moment of it.

In these photos, you would think that I am girl who has life sorted, who has it all figured it out. The reality is that a thousand things happened to me that day among those: I blocked my bank card because I forgot the pin, I lost my bus card which I had recently topped up, I was sick with flu, my landlord told me that he will not renew our contract and that we should look for a place to move in three months and on top of that, these shoes were really uncomfortable and they were killing me. So I just put them on for the photo, then I changed them for white sneakers.

But you didn’t see me complaining, nor was I showing you guys how worried or stressed I was. In fact, I had a pretty fun day and that’s what you could see on my insta stories. That’s what I wanted to highlight, not the sad part of my day. I had two really cool events, one with River Island and another fun and secret party with Bacardi. I spent the afternoon with my blogger friend Rosa and with her I always have a great time, we can be ourselves without having to put on any filters. If all that was not enough, then I met two friends and went to dance Latin music in a pub nearby. I got home at midnight exhausted and feeling even more sick with the flu. It was a crazy day but it was worth every second.

PS: Stop comparing your life with someone else’s Instagram feed. No one has life figured out and in the end we all have similar struggles and multiple problems. Some of us just decide to look on the bright side and we keep going with our lives.

Love,

Paola

Besos,

Paola.
